Johan van Brussel came here from the Netherlands in 1967 and met Wolfe on the slopes of Cader Idris. They moved to Llangedwyn in 1987, when Johan was working as a career in a local day center. He joined Wolfe's studio in the early 1990's where he learned all the skills involved in stained glass design and construction. He particularly enjoys the flexibility of the copper foil or "Tiffany" technique. Johan is the public face of Mirage Glass. His ground floor workshop is the showroom for our smaller pieces; screens, mirrors, lamps, boxes, clocks, and glass jewellery.
Photos of our larger work may also be seen here.
Wolfe van Brussel set up her first studio in 1978, and went to Wrexham Collage of art in 1983-4 to study architectural stained glass. Her own work is abstract, and evolves from observation and perception of place, mood, atmosphere, even memory, rooted in landscape and inspired by the legends of Wales and of the borderlands.
Using lead and flat glass, Wolfe explores the traditional techniques of kiln fired glass painting, silver stain and surface etching, and stained glass mosaic. She has designed for domestic, corporate and ecclesiastical situations.
As most of our work is commissioned and entails working within briefs set out by architects and clients, many elements of colour and design are fixed beforehand and artistic freedom is limited. Within these constraints, each new work is a unique challenge, both in design terms and in supplying our clients needs within budget and on time. |
